Zop 7.5mg Tablets contain 7.5 mg of zopiclone, a prescription-only hypnotic belonging to the Z-drug class. Zopiclone is used for the short-term treatment of significant insomnia in adults, including difficulty falling asleep, repeated waking during the night and waking earlier than intended.
Zopiclone works through the GABA-A receptor complex in the central nervous system, enhancing the effects of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. This produces sedative and hypnotic effects that can help reduce sleep-onset difficulties and support sleep maintenance. Because continued use may lead to tolerance, dependence and withdrawal symptoms, treatment should be limited to the shortest clinically appropriate period.
Zopiclone is intended for clinically significant insomnia rather than as a general everyday sleep aid. It may be considered when sleep difficulties are severe, disabling or causing significant distress.
Zopiclone acts at specific sites within the GABA-A receptor complex in the brain. By enhancing GABA-mediated inhibitory activity, it produces a calming and hypnotic effect on the central nervous system. This activity can shorten the time needed to fall asleep and help maintain sleep during the night. Zopiclone generally begins to take effect relatively soon after administration, which is why it is normally taken shortly before bedtime. Zopiclone is not intended for prolonged routine use. Repeated or extended treatment can increase the possibility of tolerance, physical or psychological dependence and withdrawal symptoms.
The prescribed dose should be followed carefully. Zopiclone should be taken only when there is enough time available for a full night’s sleep, as residual drowsiness and reduced alertness can occur the following day.
Zopiclone can cause side effects affecting alertness, coordination, memory, taste and the gastrointestinal system. Some effects are more likely to be noticed shortly after taking the tablet or the following morning.
Zopiclone can cause complex sleep behaviours in some people, including activities carried out while not fully awake and with little or no memory afterwards. The risk may be increased by alcohol or other medicines that depress the central nervous system.
Zopiclone should not normally be stopped suddenly after regular or prolonged use without medical advice. Abrupt discontinuation can result in withdrawal symptoms, including disturbed sleep, anxiety, restlessness and irritability. When treatment has been used regularly, a healthcare professional may recommend gradually reducing the dose before stopping completely. This approach can help reduce withdrawal effects and may also reduce the likelihood of rebound insomnia.
Zop 7.5mg is generally prescribed for short-term treatment of insomnia, usually for a few days to a maximum of 4 weeks, including any period needed to gradually reduce the dose. Longer treatment is generally not recommended because prolonged use can increase the risk of dependence and reduced effectiveness.
Zopiclone is intended for short-term use rather than prolonged routine treatment. Continued use can increase the risk of tolerance and dependence, so the duration should follow the prescribing clinician’s instructions.
Alcohol should be avoided while taking zopiclone because it can increase sedation, impairment and other central nervous system effects.
Zopiclone can cause next-day drowsiness, reduced alertness, dizziness and impaired coordination. Do not drive or operate machinery if you remain affected or do not feel fully alert.
Stopping suddenly after regular use may cause withdrawal symptoms or rebound sleep difficulties. If treatment has been used regularly, discontinuation should be discussed with a healthcare professional so that the dose can be reduced appropriately.
